Menthol crystals are monoterpenoid crystals (chemical formula C₁₀H₂₀O) extracted from the essential oils of plants in the genus Mentha (such as peppermint and Asian mint) of the Lamiaceae family, or synthesized artificially. Characterized by its strong natural cooling sensation and pure minty aroma, it is widely used in daily chemical and food industries, making it a classic raw material that combines functionality and practicality.
Chemical Composition: A single chemical substance. Naturally extracted products typically have a purity ≥99%, while synthetic products can reach over 99.5%. Its chemical name is 2-isopropyl-5-methylcyclohexanol, existing as both levorotatory (dominantly natural) and dextrorotatory isomers. Levorotatory menthol has a more pronounced cooling sensation and aroma.
Physical Properties: At room temperature, it is a colorless needle-like or prismatic crystal or a white crystalline powder with a strong, pure minty cooling sensation and a refreshing minty aroma. Melting point is approximately 42-44℃, boiling point approximately 212℃. It is slightly soluble in water, readily soluble in ethanol, oils, and most organic solvents. It sublimates easily upon heating and slowly melts into a liquid above 33℃.
Chemical Properties: It exhibits good stability and is not easily decomposed in neutral or weakly acidic environments. It is resistant to normal processing temperatures (stable for use in food baking, daily chemical production, etc.). It may undergo dehydration upon contact with strong alkalis, and oxidation produces menthone. Therefore, it should be avoided when storing with strong oxidizing agents and strong alkalis.

Daily Chemicals
Personal Care Products:Added to toothpaste, mouthwash, shampoo, shower gel, body lotion, antiperspirant, etc., providing a strong cooling sensation, improving the user experience, and also inhibiting bacteria and deodorizing, especially suitable for summer or refreshing products.
Skincare Products:Used in cooling sprays, after-sun repair creams, acne gels, etc., relieving skin dryness and redness, and helping to improve acne problems, suitable for oily and acne-prone skin.
Fragrances and Insect Repellents: Used in cooling fragrances, mosquito repellents, etc., the refreshing scent can invigorate the mind while helping to repel insects.
Food and Beverages:
Food Flavoring:Widely used in mints, chewing gum, ice cream, jelly, baked goods, etc., giving a rich, cool minty flavor, enhancing the sensory appeal of the product, and masking some of the odors of the raw materials.
Beverage Blending:Used in carbonated beverages, fruit juices, tea drinks, and alcoholic beverages (such as cocktails and mint liqueurs), bringing a refreshing taste, reducing the sweetness of drinks, and meeting the needs of summer beverages.
Powerful cooling sensation and outstanding sensory experience: The cooling sensation of menthol crystals acts directly on the cold receptors of the skin and mucous membranes, with rapid onset, high intensity, and long-lasting cooling effect. Compared to mixtures such as peppermint oil, its cooling effect is purer and more controllable, making it the "baseline ingredient" for natural cooling.
Multifunctional synergy and high practicality: Wide compatibility: It can be used alone or combined with ingredients such as citral and eucalyptol to enrich the flavor or efficacy of products. It is easily soluble in various systems without affecting the original texture of the product.
Stable source and high cost-effectiveness: Both natural extraction (freeze-crystallization of peppermint essential oil) and artificial synthesis (using limonene and isoprene as raw materials) processes are mature. Raw materials are readily available and produced in large quantities. Natural and synthetic products can meet the cost requirements of different fields, offering a significant cost-effectiveness advantage.
