There are about 90 species of Magnolia plants in the Magnoliaceae family worldwide, including about 30 species in China, of which about 20 have medicinal value. Magnolia officinalis is mainly distributed in western Hubei, southern Sichuan, southern Shaanxi, and southern Gansu; Magnolia officinalis is mainly distributed in Jiangxi, Anhui, Zhejiang, Fujian, Hunan, Guangxi, and northern Guangdong. Magnolia officinalis and Magnolia officinalis with concave leaves often have cross distribution and are both extensively cultivated through artificial means.

Magnolia officinalis is a deciduous tree, with a height of 7-15 meters. The winter buds are covered by leaflets, and after opening, the leaflets fall off. Single leaves alternate, densely distributed at the tips of small branches, leaves elliptical and ovate, 20-45cm long and 10-25cm wide, leathery, apex blunt or pointed, base wedge-shaped or rounded, entire margin or microwave-assisted, back covered with gray white short hairs when young, white powdery when old.
